Painting: the past in the present
Visual explorations between self and place that rely on recall and felt experience as a way of keeping the past in the present. My primary aim with this body of work is to celebrate the diversity of Scottish culture, albeit from a Glaswegian perspective, through my visual art practice. I particularly want to acknowledge the migrant women of Glasgow's East End, many of whom came from Ireland to Scotland at the turn of the 20th century. It is through a process of weaving wet and dry materials, in the making of paintings and drawings that I celebrate not only their contribution to the community and culture of Glasgow, but, as a homage to my mother whose identity was embedded in her craft of knitting that was enjoyed by many.
